Saturday, June 21 2009. Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA, USA: Dr Marcus Eriksen of the environmental group Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF) displays a sample of "plastic soup": marine debris that he recovered from the North Pacific Gyre last year. Eriksen and his wife Anna Cummins were in PB one day after completing a six-week journey from Vancouver to TJ to raise awareness about marine debris. The couple spoke at 40 different events along the way and presented 5 mayors with samples of the "plastic soup". The confluence of currents in a remote part of the Pacific known as the North Pacific Gyre has created a high concentration of marine debris - particularly plastics - that is clogging the area, endangering marine life and entering our food chain. A lantern fish is seen in the middle of the frame - this fish is known to eat a lot of the plastic debris and is in turn eaten by the larger fish that end up on our dinner tables.
